Gospel reading for 11/16
Luke 17:26-37
Imagine if we all woke up, turned on the news, and found out that the end times were coming….tomorrow.
Certainly we would be changed people! (And very few would show up to work that day!) But if we all had to continue our normal routine, knowing that the Son of Man would be returning the next morning, what would we do differently? I believe that as each of us went through our usual routines – working, driving, shopping, etc. – we would approach everyone around us with more kindness: perhaps exchanging small talk with a cashier instead of just hastily throwing our groceries her way; forgiving the person who accidentally cut us off on the highway, instead of waving a fist at him; smiling and greeting our co-workers as they pass us in the hallway, instead of just grunting into our coffee cup; or reminding our spouses or children that we love them, instead of pointing out something annoying they did; generally leaving the world a more peaceful place than it was the day before.
So what are we waiting for?
As we get closer to Christmas with all its hustle and bustle, we tend to be more rushed, more stressed, and more curt toward others. Let’s change that this holiday season! Let’s approach each day as though the Son of Man was returning tomorrow. For all we know, He could be!
